Best Books-Babies

Reading stories is such an important part of childhood. You're never too young for books! Research shows that regularly reading to babies as young as six months of age leads to stronger vocabularies and better early literacy skills four years later, just as the children are getting ready to go to school!

Here are some of our favourite books best suited for children 0-1 year old. You won’t find any paper pages or tearable flaps in this list! Only titles perfectly suited for the smallest members of the family. Dont forget to click on the pictures to take you to where to buy.

Tummy time

This book folds out like an accordion, so you can stand it up in front of your baby for some extra motivation and distraction during tummy time. The illustrations are a mix of high-contrast black-and-white patterns (perfect for newborns), images of smiling babes and mirrored pages so your baby can gaze at their own reflection and practise those smiles!

Soft book

This soft and simple baby busy book was such a hit with both my kids. There are lift the flaps as well as clips, velcro and more.

Never touch

You must never touch a platypus… except in this book! This animal-themed touch-and-feel book is perfect for babies. My babies loved this one from around 3 months when they started reaching out to feel it during tummy time. It includes funny rhymes that introduces a selection of weird and wacky-looking animals. Each page has a different rubber texture to feel.

Mix and Match

This fun little fabric book allows babies to lift flaps in order to “solve” each animal.

Mirror feelings

Yonge babies will just get a kick out of seeing their own face in the mirror. As they get older, the book gives prompts like, "Little lion looks so happy! Can you look happy, too?" helping them to understand and explore emotions.

Peekaboo flaps

Another great fabric book- yay for no ripped pages! This one has so many flaps which reveal hiding animals. Sure to keep baby busy!

My kids were obsessed with these books as babies. The storyline is simple and the flaps are felt so baby cant tear them!

Whose feet?

A funny little story in a soft, machine washable design. Little ones love fiddling with the feet during tubby time, before learning to flip the pages as they grow.

That’s not my bee

Meet five busy bees in this charming addition to the much-loved That's not my... series. Babies love the best-selling That's not my… books with their bold illustrations, patches to stroke, and a mouse to spot on every page, all designed to develop sensory and language awareness.

Tails

This two pack set includes fish tails and garden tails books. With crinkley paper inside the tails and lots of different fabrics for texture exploration, my children loved these! Added bonus they have tie straps for attaching to the carseat or pram!

I had to include another of these gems because they really are such a fantastic baby book! Get ready to be asked to read this so often you slowly go mad… in the best possible way.

This sweet little book is a best seller. The high contrast images are perfect for newborns. Prop it up during tummy time or begin your shared reading journey together.

Yanking cat by tail-no, no! Gentle pat on back-yes, yes! This Book only contains two words but it’s so clever and babies find it hilarious. Your little one will be understanding and saying yes and no in no time after reading this one!

Sweet, cuddly, delightful babies - but it's time for these little babies to go to bed! A lovely first bedtime story for your little love.

First words

Babies really connect to seeing images that are realistic! This book is a great one for building little vocabularies. We start by asking our babies to point to certain things. Soon enough they are saying the words themselves.

That’s not my lion

There is a reason there are so many versions of this book! Babies love them! Repetitive language reveals a lovely simple storyline. Every page has something to touch and feel that actually adds to the story. My kids love them so much that i just had to include two in my list!

Clever monkey babies, dusty lion babies, sleepy leopard babies - the world is filled with beautiful babies.

This best seller is the perfect first bedtime story. Incorporating timeless nursery rhymes, this charming bedtime tale creates a wonderful, whimsical world, which young children will enjoy again and again.
